I know what you mean. I always thought of Drums > Space as a sort of cinematic interlude...I think if you close your eyes while listening to them you can imagine a scene playing in the background, in a dark landscape.

good to see this topic up again...been thinking about this one

someone mentioned that they thought Space was a waste of time, that they could have been playing songs instead

there is no guarantee that adding more songs to the 2nd set in place of Space would make for a better overall concert...for starters the regular song rotations would be further strained

to us, there was 2 sets, but for the boys there was 3 sets...some bands give their drummists a rest by featuring an acoustic segment to a set...somehow this doesn't seem appropriate in GD's case, especially after the electric rush of the pre-drumz and the primal mood of the Rhythm Devils

also not to be overlooked are the musical benefits to the band members due to the explorations...sometimes immediate, sometimes long term (the intangibles)

having said all that, in the early eras, they seemed to go in and out of Space (or not) almost at will, much more natural...having a predetermined Space (in later eras) does feel a little artificial

"A is for atonality" - along with your photography, absitively posolutely priceless Ian!!!

thank-you midnight sun! as most of us on this forum know, you got do what you can to put yourself in the right place at the right time and remember the art of practicing silence from time to time... mix in a little luck, and 'it' has a way of finding you.
